Aberdeen is a dynamic, modern city which has retained its history, traditions and values. Known as the "Granite City" and the "Flower of Scotland" it is also the undisputed oil capital of Europe.
Until the late 60s Aberdeen has an economy based on the traditional industries of agriculture, fishing, forestry, engineering, paper making, food processing, textiles and the services and research sectors. The search for oil in the North Sea has brought massive change with around one third of the local work force now employed in the oil related business.
Aberdeen has long been an internationally respected centre for education and boasts two universities and a number of medical, agricultural and technological research centres. It is also a commercial capital serving the wider economic region of North East Scotland and is gateway to Orkney and Shetland.
